About

React Kiwi is a private initiative that seeks to assess public interest in petitioning parliament to conduct a citizens-initiated referendum (CIR) on our electoral process particularly whether the present mixed member proportional electoral process is delivering an effective Parliament.

The primary purpose of this website is to build an email list for those interested in signing the petition that will be drafted to reflect the overall responses received to the questions set out here – that will be circulated once a sufficient number of responses have been received to the questions.

While Parliament is presently proposing a referendum on the parliamentary term at the next election; neither the present proposal for an increase in term length nor the past government’s proposal to lower the voting age address wider issues with the present model of democracy in New Zealand.

Both proposals appear to do more to entrench and advantage the present political ecosystem.  Neither proposal showed any desire to assess public sentiment about the adequacy of or public satisfaction with our present electoral process.

Given the apparent drift towards ever increasing voter disengagement, a wider conversation as to the future structure of our democratic process seems to be urgently required.

We have focussed around six key questions to promote positive conversations about the best options going forward.

On the resources page we list a number of local and other sources that provide information regarding electoral reform and voting resources. This includes the NZ Elections site and others. They are all public sources and no permission or endorsement is implied.
